Marco Steinacher

Personal

Marco's first computing experience was as a child with an IBM PC/Intel 8086. He soon wrote his first programs in COBOL and BASIC, including a French vocabulary trainer, which he then sold to his classmates. In 1998, while still inhigh school, he started a small business, which offered web hosting and web application development. In parallel, he started studying computer science at ETH Zurich, but after two years, he transferred to the physics department at the university of Bern, where he earned a PhD in climate and environmental physics (2012), and worked for eight years as a researcher developing climate and earth system models. His doctoral thesis was honored with the faculty prize.

After his scientific career, Marco worked for seven years as managing director of the newly founded Warmbächli housing cooperative. Between the plethora of diverse tasks that come with building, establishing, and running an innovative housing cooperative, he developed software to simplify administration and communication within the cooperative.

At Tegonal, Marco is excited to be part of a cooperative of a different kind and he likes the variety of tasks that come with a small team. The challenge of finding the right software solution for a given problem appeals to Marco – and even more so when open source software is involved.
